Rainy day around Tauranga

Today was ANOTHER rainy day :( But we made the most of it! We did some wine tasting at Mills Reef Winery, visited Mosspo's Honey to sample delicious honey products and see bees, and explored the Mount Maunganui area. We were walking on the beach when the downpour really hit and got pretty soaked. But then the sun came out ad the rest of the afternoon was quite lovely!

Black Water Rafting with Glowworms

We went on a big cave adventure today! Walking and rafting on tubes through Ruakuri Cave (part of the extensive Waitomo cave system). We opted for the shorter and cheaper tour and I'm happy with our choice. By the time the tour was finishing I was ready to be dry and warm. Very exciting though, and I'm proud to say I didn't have any cave claustrophobia freakouts. Even though some spots were pretty tight!

We also saw an eel in the river in the cave! It was very curious and came forward to explore the beam from the flashlight. A bit creepy to be rafting in the water with eels, but we had wetsuits so I wasn't too scared :)

The scariest part was jumping backwards over the waterfalls. We practised outside and most of us got quite a bit of water up our noses. I was more successful on the jumps inside the cave though, so that was good.

The best part was floating on the water looking up at all the glowworms. It was very peaceful and cool!

Fun times were had by all. Definitely a NZ adventure worth doing!

Ready for our cave adventure
Have to find the right size of tube to fit our bum (there were only 2 options)
Practising making the "eel" chain for when we are floating in the cave
Scott had a good practice jump
Haha funny picture of Ryu
Into the cave we go....bye world!
Cool cave!
Wee this is fun!
Ryu and Beka are loving it too!
But not as much as Travis, haha. Alicia too!
Cool promo shot (not taken on our trip)
Another promo shot of the waterfall jump!
We made it!

Swimming hole with friends

We lucked out with some nice morning weather so we took everyone to the swimming hole. Fun!

Yay sunshine
Travis in mid-jump, haha
Dexter got to swim too!

Rainbow Springs and other Rotorua funtimes

After a delicious breakfast we headed off to Rotorua today. The plan had been to do some adventure-type activities, but it was rainy so we altered the plan to fit the weather. First stop was Rainbow Springs to see some native New Zealand plants and animals. The highlight was the tour of their kiwi house and rescue program. Because the survival rate of wild kiwi chicks is only 5%, the program takes eggs from the wild, raises the chicks to 6 months, and then releases them back to the wild. This insreases the survival rate to ~60%! Way better. Unfortunatly we weren't allowed to take pictures in the kiwi area, but you can see some on our previous kiwi house visit (and more kiwi facts, because I don't feel like writing them all out again).

As we were entering the park the most amazing thing happened. All sorts of birds and other wildlife just came and perched all over us! It was so magical:
Friendly animals! (haha)
Looking at the rainbow trout
Travis takes in the fern
Cute parrot
The Moa is a crazy animal! Too bad they are all gone :(
First cool animal endemic to New Zealand: the kea. Very curious parrots found on the south island, and are known to sometimes chew away the rubber around car doors. Kea parrots will sometimes attack sheep, which led them to be killed by farmers. The numbers dwindled so much that they are now protected.

Kea parrot
They are very curious birds. Hope he doesn't eat my pack! (He didn't)
Scott's favourite New Zealand animal, the tuatara. They have some cool lineage which makes them special...too lazy to write about it so read it yourself :)

Lots of tuatara babies
Adult tuatara
Pretty (and loud) parrot

This lovebird feels left out :(
Travis and Alicia being amazing at the birds!
Ryan and Beka are amazed too!

Next we went on the Big Spash ride, which was like a log ride with cool scenery. Getting wet wasn't really ideal, but we were mostly covered with our raincoats :)

Weee!!
Scary?
Watch out for that dinosaur!!!
Eaaaagle!!!
Hello!
Travis didn't get the memo about the group picture.
Waterfall!
WATERFALL!
Having lunch in the van
Mmmm

It was still rainy and miserable at this point, so it seemed like a perfect time to visit the hot pools. We headed to our favourite ones in Waikite Valley. Everyone enjoyed the pools and the nice scenery, yay!

Yay being warm
Checking out the thermal walk. The air is so warm from the hot water river!
Steam!

Warm steam!
Bubbling hot water
Spider, eep!
