Koalas and kangaroos and crocs, oh my!

Australia! Today we went to the zoo and saw all the awesome Australian animals that I was looking forward to :) One of the best parts was the kangaroo enclosure, because we got to walk in amongst the kangaroos and interact with them. They are actually pretty cute, and very friendly (at least the ones in the zoo are).

The Cairns zoo has really good programming, and there were lots of presentations through out the day. It was really cute to see the ringtailed lemurs cluster around to get fed. Also we learned lots about koalas and got to pet one! So soft :)

We also opted to pay extra for a "reptile encounter", which turned out to be feeding crocodiles/alligators. It sounds more exciting than it was, since we just dangled pieces of fish into the cages on strings. Also the crocodiles weren't that hungry, so they mostly ignored us even when we knocked the fish pieces against their heads. But the alligators sure were hungry! Snap!

Our zoo ticket was good for 3 days, so I actualy returned to the zoo a few days later when Ryan and Scott were scuba diving. I caught a bunch of different shows so it was another full day of zoo awesomeness! I fed pelicans, kokaburas and a cassowary, pretty cool.

Here's many pictures...

You can't even hear this snowy owl when it flies by
This bird looks grumpy

  1. Gotta love the pelicans! Used to see snowy owls in ontario! Beautiful!

  2. Feeding the pelicans was the best. They flop the fish around in their mouths until it's facing the right way, so they can swallow it head first (so the spines on it's back don't hurt their throat).
